I got one great run in on Cape Cod last week (or was it the week before?) but nothing since. Going to head to the treadmill in a few minutes to try to remedy that.
I thought I'd done really well two weeks ago and then I had a bad backache last Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday. Had to stop running completely then, did a little on Friday and a little more yesterday, but I've really had my confidence thrown. Like I'd been happy before about the progress I'd been making with mileage but now I think I must have overdone it, and I'm afraid to push now and ugh, feeling really discouraged. :(
Thank you! This week seems to be going okay, and I'm really relieved but still worried. It was about this time last year I had some knee troubles and I ended up barely running again until September, and then I just about had to start over. I feel okay about other things, like my fic writing, going in circles with other periods for rest. But it's such a setback with running, I don't know how to stick with it if I'm not making progress.
I went for a run this morning in the first rain of autumn. It was so lovely and refreshing! (I know all you northern hemispherers will hate me for this, but the weather has been stifling here for weeks.)
Hello fellow southern hemisphere runner - glad you're cooling down! It's not as warm here (NZ), but the clocks go back an hour on Sunday, and I am going to have to either get up early or hit the treadmill. I am probably slightly worse at getting up early, but it's pretty close.
Congratulations on a fabulous run!! And all the best for Boston!
I picked up the Brad Hudson book you recommended, by the way, and am starting work at the very wimpy end of the schedule (just four hill sprints this week, after two last week!). I like the way it goes through things - very clear.
I've been running twice a week. I thought I was doing really well with improvements but I seem to be plateaued and haven't been running any faster without increasing my heart rate. :\
Personally, I usually don't run with a HR monitor. Then I can still feel like I'm doing well...
(maybe get a third run in each week? I know i saw the best improvement when i was running 4 or 5 days a week with one interval day and one tempo day. alas, those days are a year behind me and i'm struggling to run even twice a week these days)
I think you really need more than twice a week to improve past a certain level. The most minimal running programs generally have 3x, and of course mo running mo betta. Although with multisport it's probably hard to make the time for it all.
I asked a question to my tri club forum recently about the training plan and its running component, and was basically told that we're not running much because it's the activity that's hardest on the body. They want people to build up aerobic fitness on the swim and the bike and then work on getting faster with the run. So eventually we will be running more. And I get the theory, yeah, but I'm starting so far behind on running that I worry the plan isn't really designed for people like me but people whose "slow" pace is 11:00m/mi.
Am on holiday (and therefore more hopeless than usual about posting) but I have run three out of the last five days. Trying to get back into a 5x a week schedule, after too long just doing 2-3...
