Check-in

How goes it? Awesomely or not so much?

Bonus: best running experience this summer (winter if you're on the southern hemisphere)?

That's good news about your ankle, finally.

I'm really not running enough, despite the best intentions. *g*

No running at all last week for me. I had hopes for the weekend, but I had trouble all week with nausea and vertigo because of the heat, so I simply didn't dare to even make the attempt.

I'd have to say "not so much."

Withdrew from planned half-marathon (first ever, argh) this spring due to right ankle ligament problems plus dissertation overload. Completed both physical therapy and dissertation, started training again from scratch three weeks ago, aiming for an October half.

Last week, I managed to repeat whatever the hell it was I did to my ankle the first time.

Next up: repeating physical therapy exercises, this time on my own, and trying to find some sort of balance that will let me strengthen the [censored] ankle and keep training with a revised schedule/level of effort.

So. Frustrating.

It goes well! On week three of training for a half-marathon, and as it is winter here, it is perfect weather for running. I am dreading going back to the northern hemisphere, where it will be disgustingly hot and I will melt into a puddle.

Trying to train up to a 10k, but when my asthma doesn't hold me back, my bad knee does, and... so on. I'm back up to running two miles on the treadmill, but I daren't run outside in the heatwave we seem to be experiencing.

Thanks! I'm using this Novice 2 schedule, and it's working out nicely. Having built in rests and distances makes it easier to stick with the program.

After not running in nearly a year, but doing lots of walking (sprained ankle last Sept) I
jumped back into couch to 5K at the 8+8 week and it was fine! V. proud of self. :-)

Awesomely!

Best running experience: I ran down to the coffee shop where our running club meets on Saturday mornings to do the group run - I hadn't been in a couple of years, but I thought it might be fun. Well, after about half a mile it turned out EVERYONE was doing walk breaks, and I didn't want to, so I turned around to head home and pick up my mp3 player so I could listen to my audiobook, and along the way a guy hailed me and said that he had shown up too late for the running club but he'd seen me veer off when everyone started walking, and if I was doing a longish run could he come with me?

It turned out that he lives in Chicago but was down here visiting his daughter. We had a great run together, saw a bunch of deer along the path including a group of young bucks and a doe with what must have been a fairly recently newborn fawn, all tiny and covered in spots.

I have this: http://www.big5sportinggoods.com/product/balance-trainers/478242-152540/harbinger-balance-trainer.html Dyna Disc is another brand name.

I agree with [personal profile] blnchflr that using it for shorter periods (at least early) is probably better. I stand on one leg for one minute, then switch legs, and then I do things like pass a weight around while standing on one leg, but the weighted exercises are for maybe 30 sec each at most.

Man, we do seem to have had a spate of ankle injuries in the group!

Glad to hear your half-marathon training is going well! And I am jealous of your weather.

I just signed up for my first half-marathon, but it's not until Nov 10th. So I am plotting out a training schedule that I will start in a few weeks. Right now I'm just running whenever it isn't too hot.
