Check-in

How goes it? Gearing up for races or gearing down for summer (if you're situated on the northern hemisphere)?

Whee! I am running! And it's going well! I can now run over 6K without walking breaks (best time: 6.2K in 48 minutes) and I ran a mile in 11 minutes.

my first ever race is on Friday. 6.2K trough the inner city, starting at 22:15. That'll be interesting :)

What an odd race distance plus start time! We have a 5K series called 'a night at the races' in the evening, but it's a much more moderate 19:00 start. Do give a race report for your first ever race!

I've been running slowly and not so surely. I finished my Escape from Alcatraz tri a few weeks ago and the run was a little disappointing (but predictable given how much I'd been not running) for me. It was more an 8 mile trail hike and less 8 mile trail run.

I've signed up for a half Ironman at the end of September and with it comes a half marathon, so I'm going to focusing on preparing for that. I'm sort of torn on how I want to train, actually. I am not yet at the speed I was pre-broken foot last year, and I've been wanting to take the time to do short (2-3 mile) runs that focus on building speed vs. longer slower runs that build endurance at my current (walkable) pace. I will probably end up with some attempt at a mix. The good news is that this half (though it comes after swimming and biking for a few hours) is totally flat and partially shaded, which I will dig in the Augusta heat.

I took two weeks off running after my half, just because. I've been mountain biking and hiking. But today I ran 4 miles and I'm going to start ramping up again, looking toward a 17.1 mile trail race in September.

I ran just under 7 today on trails, on the one that starts right behind my house. Wouldn't you like to come run it? Yes, you would!

(Actually, you will probably want to walk the first part, because you have sea level lungs. But once you get up to the rim I bet you will enjoy the trail!)

I'm more out of training than I'd like to be at this point, but I have a scheduled race/obstacle course on July 14th that I am hoping to at least complete!

(It's one of the Zombie Races. More info at runforyourlives dot com , for anyone who's interested.)

I'm planning to run my first 10k in November. It's a long way off, but since my longest run so far has been 4.5 miles, I know I will need to train. But for the next few (hot) months my focus will be on just getting up early enough to beat the heat and run several days a week (aiming for 4 days, but I won't be too disappointed with 3.)

My latest accomplishment was fitting in some runs while traveling; previously I had taken time off from running while not at home. I visited my parents, who live just a few blocks from a very nice trail through a wooded area, and that got me motivated to get up extra early and run. I also did some easy runs while at a professional conference the following week.

I've finally gotten back to exercising (partner and I have a bet on to see who exercises more days in June/July), and while the first couple of runs were discouraging--I CAN RUN A MILE D*MMIT! type frustrating--today was a much better day, and I have an exercise buddy whom I feel guilty about not meeting at the gym, so hopefully that will make my training more consistent.

I'm running another 5k in two weeks to see if I've gotten any faster, and I am hemming and hawing about whether I'll be ready to run a 10k by the second week of August. But I do have a half-marathon with my brother-in-law scheduled for early October, so regardless, I'll be in good shape by then, and hopefully my December 10k will be easy because of the half-marathon training.
