checking in, November 2

It's still November 1 for me, but it's Monday already in Europe (not to mention the Antipodes) and since I'm in a relatively late time zone, I figured I'd put this here and you all can check in and give each other encouragement until I get up tomorrow morning.

So, how goes your training? What are your current goals? If you're in the northern hemisphere, how are you dealing with winter weather?

[personal profile] cyphomandra, how did you do in your half marathon last week?

I only managed to run twice a week the last two weeks, tsk-tsk. So my current goals (run thrice a week, get to a point where I can run 5.5k in 35 mins) stand, except I seem to be at the beginning of a cold, and unlike [personal profile] isis, running with a cold is way too unpleasant (zomg, my head) to be an option.

ETA, I forgot to talk about winter weather: I'm generally happier running in cold weather than in warm/hot - I wear a lot of clothes, and in particular need to cover my throat with a scarf, but overall, it's more pleasant than running in summer for me. I don't mind running in snow, though we don't get all that much here, but I'm very chicken about running on ice!

Hi all,

I did the half marathon in 2h 3 min and change - about a minute faster than last year, but, as I expected, still over two hours. (next year! shakes tiny fist of determination and resolves to track down the book [personal profile] ilanarama mentioned earlier). This time round at least I had my Garmin forerunner, and the record from that will hopefully help with training for all the hills I'd forgotten about from my previous go.

Making the whole weekend into an extended run/holiday (I stayed on with friends for a couple of days) worked really well. One of my running group was doing New York on similar principles - she flew in from NZ, her sister was flying in from France, and they were both going to run NY and then stay on for two weeks. Sounds great!

[personal profile] ilanarama, I hope your calf's doing okay - mine sorted itself out with lots of stretching, fortunately.

With regard to winter - I like running when it's not too warm - now's fine, because it's getting light again, but the summer (Jan/Feb) gets a bit oppressive. I think my next major event will be April/May, so I might try out some other cooler forms of exercise over summer. Hope all you northern hemisphere types are coping with the opposite problem...

After a training run a little over a week ago I started having suspicions that the pain I'd been experiencing in my foot was linked to problems with my ankle, which I sprained during the summer and likely never let fully recover because at the time I was training for a 10k. But now my ankle's properly sprained again so I'm worried about completing the bike ride I've got on Saturday (30-35 miles). So I haven't been doing much running at all but I miss it :(
