Checking in, October 19th

4 out of 5 voted for fortnightly posts; let me know if you're interested in taking turns posting these :o)

So, how is training going? What are your immediate/current goals? Any longer-term goals you're working towards?

Yesterday I ran my fall goal half-marathon; my goal time was 1:42, with a fallback goal of anything under 1:44:19 (my previous PR) and a magic pixie dust goal of 1:40, and I hit my goal pretty much bang on with a 1:41:44. I'll be posting a race report to my own journal sometime today or tomorrow.

My next goals are:

1) A decent time in the Rim Rock Marathon in 4 weeks - this is hard to quantify because it's a mountain race with serious elevation gain and loss.

2) A spring half-marathon time under 1:40.

3) Boston Marathon, goal time somewhere around 3:30.

Next summer I would like to run a 50K and maybe a 50-miler in the fall. Maybe.

I'll happily take turns with you in posting these!

Sure, I can post then.

And if you had run this race and finished in 2:35, you would still have finished ahead of more than 300 people. And that doesn't even count the people who finished after the course cut-off at 3:30.

Great times! The Boston Marathon sounds amazing - is this the first time you're running in it?

Thank you - and yes, this will be my first Boston. I actually used to live in the area and would go watch the race, but at the time I wasn't a runner. It's just such a cool historical race, and a great event, and because they have qualification standards it's quite prestigious.

Good luck in your half marathon! I also suffer from calf pain and can recommend 1) stretching by standing on steps and alternately going on your toes and letting your heels drop below the step, 2) writing the alphabet with your feet when you are just sitting around (like, at the computer :-) and 3) icing.

Thanks for the tips! I had been doing the calf raise thing earlier in the year but completely forgot about it. And I am working on the alphabet now :)

I have looked at the Boston qualification standards and would have to be much, much older or much, much faster to ever get near them - go you!
