weekly check-in
What, it's almost bed-time (for me, anyway) on Monday and nobody's made a check-in post? I guess I'd better, then. So, what did you do last week? What are you planning for this week? How is your running going?
Here's a quote from Bill Rodgers: Anybody can be a runner... We were meant to move. We were meant to run. It's the easiest sport.
ETA: I'm at a conference so have limited time to respond to comments. So why don't you all encourage each other in the comments? It's what this post is for, anyway!

I feel pretty darn good about the whole thing at the moment. :)

You did great running and completing the day's program despite the heat and the increased demands on your endurance.

I'm in Breckenridge CO for a conference, which is 3000 ft higher than my home, and wow, did I feel the altitude on today's run. There is a trail race on Wednesday I am considering - not to race, really, but just to go out and run with people.

I'm going to be traveling for most of July and was nervous about it, but today I talked to someone knowledgeable who said running is really common in the place I'm going, so I'm also feeling hopeful about that. :)

I'm running my first 5 k of the summer on Friday, it will be interesting to see what my speed baseline for this year is.

I did get in a couple of good runs, including one with my Dad, who hasn't been running for the past month or 2. He got me into running, years and years ago and so it was really fun to have a chance to run with him on Sunday - I also saw a big improvement on my pace when I was running with someone else. I'm going to make an effort for both biking and running to do at least one workout a week with a buddy, rather than doing all my training solo.

I also did some foot exercises, and discovered my right foot is much stronger and more flexible than my left foot. That really surprised me, I had assumed I used them equally.
For this week I plan to continue with the running every other day, and on alternating days I plan to start doing some beginner's pilates, to supplement the cardio with strength training. It would be great to have a stronger core, so I can improve my posture and protect my spine from the worst of the impacts of running.

I'm glad you think pilates will help me, because it's something I can do for free at home. I tried going to a class once, and I did like it, but the benefits of interacting with the teacher were outweighed by the inconvenience of having to go there at a certain time, and not understanding the directions very well.
If you are physically able to do unmodified pilates moves safely, I can recommend learning from a DVD in the comfort and convenience of your own home. I started doing pilates years ago, and dropped it because I was lazy, but I really didn't have a problem with learning from a recording.

Exercises at home are less stressful for me than going to the gym, but I must admit I haven't motivated myself to start the pilates program yet. I don't stretch after running either. I don't really know how or why I'm supposed to do it.
So far I haven't felt any muscle stiffness at all, and maybe it helps that I usually sit tailor style? I don't know. I guess I'll have to look into it at some point.

Oh, and I biked a good 25 miles on Sunday.
Time to break out the new hydration belt my girl gave me, I guess!
