I discovered I loved to run shortly after I learned to walk. :-) In elementary school, I skipped a grade, and was tiny for my age to begin with, so I was never the fastest runner - my legs were much shorter than those of my classmates. But I was tenacious. I could run for *longer* than the other kids, and I loved being good at something, even though I was smaller. I stuck with running as my sport throughout my youth, up until running on the cross-country team in high school.

Then, I stopped running, until just a couple years ago. Some very dear friends had taken up running for fitness in their 40's, and I began running to share the experience with them. I discovered I prefer to run alone than to do so with partners, but I LOVE TO RUN.

I don't do it to keep fit, though that's a nice side-benefit.
I don't do it because it helps keep my asthma under control, though it does.
I do it because when I don't, I MISS RUNNING.

For fitness, and I was wanting to do something active. It's the first time I've really done anything active since I had to quit ballet and karate after I hurt my knees in a bike accident, so I'm not good at it (second week of Couch to 5k only, so far, after all), but I've started to look forward to it already

Actually, when I run depends on the season. I run as early as possible in the summer, at midday or early afternoon in the winter, and in between....in between. (I work at home and so can set my own schedule.) I occasionally run in the evening but the weather is usually nicer in the early morning.

I was a triathlete in the late 80s, when I was in grad school and the sport was just getting started, and running was my least favorite part. Then I did a bunch of other things, including a bit of running, biking and swimming for fun but not competitively. I moved to a new town in 2002 and started running as a way of exploring my new surroundings. And oddly, I suddenly started really enjoying it.

Running requires nothing but me, my shoes, and the road. I like the freedom of it, and the fact that in a lot of ways it's me versus my lazy instincts.

Ditto this; and also, I used to run when I was younger, and there was never a down side to it. Then, life happened, which is great, but running took a back seat. Only recently, trying to run again, that I feel like I've regained an old friend.

Yes. I'm new to running, but I've walked for pleasure and exercise for years. I love going out in nature and following the seasons closely. Trying to spot the animals, and maybe catch a glimpse of my favorites several times.

I love how it helps me meditate, I can relax totally and just be, I can sort out my troubles, I can write fic in my head.

Running is a new thing for me, and I chose it because I want to keep my asthma and my blood sugar under control, and because I already love walking so much. I've tried going to the gym, but I don't do well with all the rules and restrictions and other people up in my space.

I enjoy competing with myself, trying to do better, but I've never liked competing with others.

Hah, glad I'm not the only one who plots fic in her head when she runs!

Yeah, I didn't care much for the gym either, though I did get decent about forcing myself to do 40 minutes on the ellipticals towards the end of college. I prefer to be actually going somewhere these days, though.

A physical destination is very motivational :-)
