May Challenge Kick-off: The Fellowship of the RUN!

I, for one, have immensely enjoyed our sojourn in space for the month of April; many thanks go to [personal profile] calico_jane for organizing such a fun (and informative!) motivation for our exercise hours.

But now, the world has changed. I can feel it in the air. I can smell it in the water. The earth we tread upon... is it...? ...Middle Earth?

*cue flute melody*

[personal profile] ell has named us "The Fellowship of the Run" and so we shall be, as we make our eager way where many paths and errands meet. This month, we shall journey from Hobbiton in the Shire, over hill and under hill and across the water, to our final destination at the Falls of Rauros. There, our Fellowship may sunder, or may continue on to the land of Mordor where shadows lie, based upon the will of the party.

(The poll was split 7/3, for/against, re: running for two consecutive months with the same challenge-type; so I'll ask again at the end of the month; we can figure out then if continuing makes sense, or if it's time for a different sort of fun. I'm easy, either way.)

For those who care about the Middle Earth aspects of this, I'll be using JRR Tolkien's Book Canon (rather than Peter Jackson's Movie Canon) for the journey's distances. We will indeed be stopping in to visit Tom Bombadil and his lovely bride, Goldberry. We will cover about 700 miles of the way to the edge of the Kingdom of Gondor, running as a group, if all goes according to plan. We will also be covering some of the journey's distance by our active time. This quest gives the active hours aspect quite an interesting twist; we can spend our time paddling boats down the Anduin River, spelunking in the Mines of Moria, and riding ponies across the Barrow Downs (clothing-optional for the latter portions of that adventure.) And battling orcs is always a good upper-body and core-conditioning workout, of course.

A few practical notes: If you want to adjust your distance/active hours estimate for the month, feel free to comment in this post, sometime this week. All active hours/distance choices you make about your own efforts are totally fine by me - this is all about you doing what you want to do, and motivating yourself. If you want to count it, then *you* are the only person whom you need to ask if it "counts." The estimates I have for folks at this point are as follows:

This month's challenge would have been far more difficult to organize, were it not for the amazing work already done by The Eowyn Challenge, to which I will be linking extensively in future posts. No peeking! :-)
