last year's accomplishments, next year's goals
A year ago I posted:
So, how did you do? Did you achieve your goals? Did events conspire to prevent you? Did you completely punt on them? What have you learned about yourself and about running through your successes and failures?
What are your goals for next year?
Since December's about over, I figured it would be a good time to think about/imagine/dream/plan goals for 2011.
Any running-related goal is valid, whether it's to run a 100-mile ultramarathon or to run 2 miles in a row. It can be to complete a distance, or race a distance, or attain a speed, or run a certain number of miles per week, month, or year. No judging anyone else on their speed or their slowness. These are all personal goals, relative to where we are now and where we want to be.
Feel free to put your goals in comments, or to post them in your own journal and link them here. This is mostly a placeholder and reminder so you can come back in a year and see how well you succeeded!
So, how did you do? Did you achieve your goals? Did events conspire to prevent you? Did you completely punt on them? What have you learned about yourself and about running through your successes and failures?

0 for 6! Woo!
My goals:
1) run more miles this year than last year
2) sub-3:30 for the marathon
3) sub-1:36 for a half marathon
4) sub-21:40 for a 5K
5) get better at trail races
6) stay uninjured
And my results:
1) FAIL due to stress fracture that resulted in a 4-month layoff and slow return to running
2) FAIL due to stress fracture - I had to skip the race (which I had paid over $100 for, grrr)
3) FAIL due to bad race day conditions (big headwind) although I suspect I wasn't quite in 1:35:xx shape
4) FAIL - didn't even get a PR in the one 5K I ran, and only ran one due to the stress fracture
5) FAIL - didn't even run any trail races, due to the stress fracture
6) The big FAIL from which all other failures sprang!
So, I'm making another run at these same goals in 2012. Except #6 is moving to #1 priority :-)

They were:
Shamrock 1/2 Marathon
Eagleman 1/2 Ironman
Frankfurt City Tri
Frankfurt Marathon
all accomplished :-) (along with the marriage and the international move :-)
In addition, at 25:40 I got a 5K PR at the Frankfurt AIDS Run. The second mile of that 5K I ran at a 7:49 pace which is the first sub 8 minute mile I've ever run in a race (well, since I was in HS) and by the Garmin I actually ran 3.2 miles for an overall 8:01/mile pace.
My goals for next year:
Races already signed up for:
Frankfurt 1/2 Marathon
Worms 111 Tri
Wiesbaden 70.3
Additional goals:
Frankfurt Marathon in 4:10 or less (that's only 6 minutes less than the last one which was 12 minutes faster than the one before that)
Write up race reports within a week of races :-)
Get a 5 km in under 25:20
Run the Frankfurt 1/2 in 1:55 (all my 1/2's hover between 1:56 and 1:58, so I think this is totally doable)
Train smart and take care of injuries.
Things I've learned this year:
No matter how I plan it, something is always going to get in the way of the perfect race day prep.
I love long slow runs and should probably do more of them.
Biking is easier than running
Swimming is harder than either of those
I absolutely need to add speedwork in if I want to get faster.

I agree a 1:55 half should be totally doable for you.

But the 1:55 - I'm glad you think is reasonable and doable, unlike my stretch goal for the last marathon...
(About that last marathon - I kind of went into it thinking I was going to go slightly too fast just so I could see what the wall felt like. So in that respect, I succeeded! The wall sucks! Had I gone out only slightly slower I most likely would not have blown up completely at km 32 or so and actually finished faster. But it was my second one and I really wanted to know what would happen. And I found out :-)

Next year, I'd like to PR in one race. That would be 4:39. I'm hoping to spend the summer training to do that in an early fall marathon. Maybe Wineglass or Steamtown.
So, maybe 7-8 marathons and maybe 3-4 halfs.
And like Ilana, I want to stay uninjured.

I have heard good things about both Wineglass and Steamtown.

2011 Goals
1. Half Marathon in under 3 hrs HA! FAIL!
2. 5K in 30 minutes HAHAHA! FAIL!
Hahahahahaha. *kof* Spent the late winter/early spring laid up with some ITB weirdness, nursed myself back to health in the late spring, and promptly broke my foot in May. AWESOME SEASON WAS AWESOMELY LAME.
This year I learned not to laugh at friends when they always make their first goal to start and finish their races healthy and injury free. It is now my first goal too.
2012 Goals
1. I will do a half marathon if it kills me. It is, at this point, a matter of pride. I had put the others off thinking that it wouldn't be fun if I was under trained and suffering unduly through run/walk hell. Fuck that. Now, I just want to complete one so it's no longer hanging over me. I can work on time goals and PRs in the future.
2. Get my base back. I also learned in 2011 that you can basically never stop running ever. I want to go back to the halcyon days where there was a
painfullyridiculouslyslow pace I could hold for miles without getting too tired or out of breath. Where, yeah, most of the runs I did were a endless struggle to put one foot in front of the other at a respectable clip, but sometimes I could back off, downshift, and there was a beautiful coasting gear that let me travel for miles before things started to protest. Oh, Zone 2 HR, I didn't appreciate you until you were gone. *sniffle*no subject
I will say (in case you haven't been following along at home) that it seemed to take me the same amount of time to get back that I was down with the injury. So hopefully if you stay with it and stay healthy you will surpass your former level!

I am seeing rapid-ish improvements in the speed department. I ran an 8K in November and another one last week and knocked more than a minute per mile off my time. Still painfully slow, but I'm definitely improving quickly. I think this would all go much better if I could just turn off the bit of my brain that is doing constant comparisons to where I was before I broke my foot.

I think maybe I should just sign up for a half, too, instead of always hoping one day I'll be in the shape for one - the first couple of 10Ks I participated in sucked, too, because I wasn't in proper shape, but I never regretted running them.
Still, looking at 2,5-3 hours of suck is more intimidating than just 1+ hour of suck :)

Running-Related Goals for 2012
1) Stay uninjured (including figuring out how to prevent running-induced migraine).
2) Improve my regular 5k pace to the equivalent of just under 10 min/mi.
3) Run at least 3 actual races of at least 5k in length as a registered participant.
Small goals comparatively, but good ones for me!

I get migraines, but thankfully I have only got one while running once. My only suggestions would be to stay hydrated, and possibly drink coffee or tea if caffeine helps you and isn't a trigger.

1. I met my stated goal of going running more than once \o/
2. I PR'd 4 times on the 5K!
3. I PR'd on 10K!
4. I ran my longest race yet, 13,3K.
5. I ran the most K in one month yet, 50 km!
6. I participated in the most races in a year, something like 11 races.
I don't know how I'm going to top that :)
My goals for 2012 will be to keep running semi-regularly, and to participate in races, and to work on just signing up for that half-marathon and just sucking it up :)
