Weekly check-in

Happy Tuesday, runners!

Here in the US we've just had a 3 day weekend and here on the east coast, it's getting hot!

In lieu of an inspirational quote today, here's a song off one of my running mixes:

Do you run with music? What's on your running playlist these days?

I always run with music, if only to distract myself from my loud breathing :)

I have an iPod with radio functionality so sometimes I'll listen to the 70s/80s station and sometimes to talk radio (though they rarely have anything interesting on at the times I usually run).

The only drawback is that running the iPod as a radio eats battery like whoa, and signal isn't always good where I run, so I've recently taken to having it play its entire contents in alphabetical order by song title. That should take me through the summer all right :)

And this way, I end up running to music I usually skip because it's not very runnable, like Philip Glass's violin concerto, anything by Van der Graaf Generator, or, shock horror, one of my own songs from way back when.

OMG it's summer. I can tell this because when I went out for my run yesterday I played a new game called Run toward the Shade Before I Pass Out, OMFG.

And I do run with music! It's generally one or two songs on repeat for the hour. I'm not really interested in the music; I just want the noise to help me zone out. I also listen to the occasional podcast. I would love to wean myself down to nothing because you can't have headphones during races, but so far it's still a no go. :(

I rarely run with music; I like to listen to audiobooks when I run with headphones (my long and easy runs). When I run tempos I either listen to music, or nothing, and intervals I listen to nothing because I need to pay attention to distance and time and stuff.

I'm still not running, woe!

I usually run with music and sometimes podfics, less often other podcasts and audiobooks. My headphones gave out a week and a half ago (um, I think from too much sweat) and I've been frustrated trying to replace them and getting three different sets that just fall out of my ears. :(

Still, I ran 18.4 miles in four runs last week, including a new record for me of 5.6 with no stopping on Sunday, and this week is also going well. Still very nervous heading toward my first 10K on the 12th though.

I run with music when I'm by myself - I use the Podrunner bpm mixes if I want to switch off and just run to a beat, or else I have a random assortment. I tend to start races to Sisters of Mercy "This Corrosion", which relaxes me enough that I don't take off too fast, and finish to Asian Kung Fu Generation's Rewrite, which is one of the Full Metal Alchemist anime openings and can make me go faster even at the end of a half-marathon :)

I listen to audiobooks as I run - I find them much more distracting in a good way than music, since I'm not so tempted to dance. Dancing would sap valuable energy. :)

Last week was a write-off for me, because I was exhausted and under the weather. It was a big relief to go out this morning and find I could run again!
