Wanted: Short Running Tights for a Big Girl

So, apparently I've somehow morphed from walker to runner in the last 18 months. I'm in the process of running my second pair of shoes into the ground, and yesterday I broke my distance PR and ran 13.5K at a stretch.

So I thought I'd reward myself with a new pair of running shorts to replace the pair I like less: the ones that are annoyingly between tight and loose and where the zipper on the little key pocket in the back broke ages ago. They're still wearable, they're just super ugly and not key-friendly any more so I can only wear them with the bike shirt because that has a pocket, and so I thought, hey, I'll go out and get another pair like the ones I do like - plain running tights that end just above the knee and have a functioning key pocket in the back.

Except I apparently forgot one thing. I'm a Clydesdale-class runner. Yep, the icon up there is pretty accurate - I'm a size 44 in European sizes, or a 14 in US terms. And that's partly due to taking up running because this time last year I was a 46/16. In addition, I manage to be a big hourglass figure, i.e. I do have a waist between those nearly-D cups and the belly-dancer hips.

I checked three different department stores with large sportswear sections and one dedicated sportswear store. Nada. Apparently if you're my size, you're only allowed to wear yoga pants or capris this year. And given the tendency for all women's pants to be about four inches too long these days, the so-called capris went to mid-calf on me. Which is a length I don't need in summer - also, I'm not self-conscious about my knees and I'm fine with them being out in the open. Really! All I need is something just long enough to avoid any chafing on the thighs, because they do meet and that's not going to change even if I drop another size or two.

So, [community profile] runners-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope.

Any recommendations for places/brands/models that cater to larger runners, either in stores or online? Or styles you like that spring to mind? Since my running enabler [personal profile] ell and I will still be on different continents for a little while longer, American and European sources are both fine... and since the only places that even carry, much less stock, sports bras in my size are online, I suspect online may be the only way to go. Any pointers very, very welcome!

1) that's Athena for the girls :-)

2) soon you're going to be running far enough that you will need that really nice hydration belt your girlfriend bought you - keys go in that.

3) will check some of the running stores around here, maybe today. I'm pretty sure they must have something as i see a lot of people of all shapes and sizes (though none as nicely shaped as you) with proper running clothes.
