I've never posted here before, so what better way than with a race report? I posted this to my other running group and decided I'd share it here as well.
It's race report time )

Race reports

Hi there - it's been a while! Hope your running or other activity is going well these days.

If you're interested, I posted reports on two ten-mile races I did this summer on my journal.

Last weekend [personal profile] meri_oddities and I ran the Green Bay half marathon, and it was really fun. Very well-organized race. I was totally untrained, though, so we're not talking about my time.

I was using my iPhone for race tracking, and it says I ran 14.26 miles, rather than the expected 13.1. What I'm trying to figure out is, is it possible that my tangents are that horrible, or is the phone probably wrong? I've never had reason to think its distance is inaccurate before; I use it all the time running at home, and its distances have always been more or less the same as what I'd get from my Garmin on my regular routes. But, wow, that's a big difference.

Here's the mile-by-mile breakdown. I missed the first mile marker, so the first lap covers the first two miles.
Mile Marker Race Distance GPS Distance
2 2 2.08
3 1 1.03
4 1 1.03
5 1 1.11
6 1 1.13
7 1 1.1
8 1 1.09
9 1 1.05
10 1 1.04
11 1 1.07
12 1 1.08
13.1 1.1 1.45
Total 13.1 14.26

That last lap included a foray into Lambeau Field, and I stopped a few times for photos, so I'm not surprised it's on the long side. Most of the other laps aren't too awful, except for miles 5 and 6.

What do you think? Do I just need to learn to run better routes? Are my phone's numbers completely unlikely? Help!!!

Treadmill Recommendations

Hi everyone,

I recently found this group, so my apologies if this has been asked before, but do you have any recommendations for a treadmill for home use? Or even just recommended brands?

I live in Ottawa, Canada and while I don't mind running in the cold, we have already had some freezing rain this year and more is expected. I'm training for my first marathon and I don't want to miss too many training days, but when the streets turn into skating rinks (literally), I'm hesitant to venture out for fear of slipping and injuring myself.

Any insights appreciated!

a couple of articles about interesting runners

Two running-related links that you may find interesting:

Good Luck, Morons about "Lazarus Lake" and the race he puts on in Tennessee, the infamous Barkley Marathons 100-mile race, which has only been finished (within the 60-hour time limit) by 14 people in the thirty years it's been held.

How a 13-year-old Canadian girl ran the world’s fastest marathon about Maureen Wilton Mancuso, who broke the female Canadian distance record and the female world record for the marathon in 1967, when women were not considered capable of running long distances. (Her race was two weeks after Kathrine Switzer ran the Boston Marathon by registering under her initials and avoiding the angry race director as he tried to physically throw her off the course.)

New Year, New Challenge!

I'm going to try to run a January challenge. If you'd like to participate, please post your distance goal and/or active hours goal in the comments!

New participants are welcome!
The distance goal can be in miles or kilometers, but I'll assume miles if you don't specify. Active hours can be a particular type of activity (usually biking for me), or total amount of activity (swimming, martial arts, hiking, whatever).

November Challenge

Hi Runners!

I was thinking that a November Challenge is in order and I'd be happy to come out of my DW hibernation and run it this month.

There are several reasons why running would be good for us this month:

1) It's NaNo month and running boosts creativity

2) For many of us, the days are getting shorter and colder, the clocks are turning back soon or have just turned back and running can improve your mood. For all the southern hemispheric folks, running now will help get you fit for a summer of fun activities. (No, I'm not jealous. Or bitter.)

3) For all of us, the stress of the holidays is coming (and the stress of the T-word being elected next week) and running can help with anxiety and depression.

So I propose a November running challenge. Let's work together and have a great, productive, and sweaty November!

I am trying to get back into running again after a series of unfortunate events (like bad hips that lead to bad knees and moving to a new(old) continent.

My running/exercise goal this month is to do some exercise every day. Starting today. Running, I hope to get 50 miles this month. And break in the new running shoes I bought yesterday. Comment here with your goals and I will make us a spreadsheet and post our progress weekly.

Marathon race report

If you're interested, I posted about my first marathon over at my journal.

Thanks again for all your encouragement!

First-time stories/advice?

Hey there! I'm running my first marathon on Sunday, and would love to hear short stories about your first marathon, or first other big event. Advice is also welcome! Or any other distracting anecdotes. :)

I also wanted to say thank you to all of the participants in this community - the support that I've found from checking in here off and on over the last several years really helped me get to the point where I believed I could sign up to run a marathon.

And a special thank you to [personal profile] ilanarama who helped construct the training plan that I have (mostly) followed for the last 18 weeks!
