The Fellowship of the Run Continues!!!
It was a challenging week for many of us, on the exercise front -- injuries, bad weather, not to mention the occasional attack by freaky hooded guys with weird spiky crowns. Who knew Weathertop was such a bad neighborhood? Not me!
The road we have taken beyond Weathertop has been a steady climb up into the Trollshaws. We've had to cut across country, and sometimes it has been hard to carry on...They made their way slowly and cautiously round the southwestern slopes of the hill and came in a little while to the edge of the road. There was no sign of the riders. But even as they were hurrying across they heard far away two cries: a cold voice calling and cold voice answering. Trembling they sprang forward, and made for the thickets that lay ahead. The land before them sloped away southwards, but it was wild and pathless; bushes and stunted trees grew in dense patches with wide barren spaces in between. The grass was scanty, coarse, and grey; and the leaves in the thickets were faded and falling. It was a cheerless land, and their journey was slow and gloomy. (FOTR, p.267 Houghton Mifflin 1st printing edition, 1965)
Those big stone statues we passed in the last couple days were... interesting. You know the ones, depicting those three ugly, burly fellows? A bit strange, wen't they? But we have persevered, and with some judicious use of our active hours time (to stand in for Frodo riding Bill the Pony or Glorfindel's horse, Asfaloth, due to his injury) we have forded the River Bruinen and have come to...

Rivendell!! We have come to the Last Homely House, the dwelling of the Elves in the West. Really nifty architecture and furniture design. Lots of tasty food (unless you're a dwarf and don't really care for elvish cuisine, I guess). And Elrond is a marvelously gracious host (once you get used to him talking about DOOM all the time. But hey, every story needs an Eeyore, right?)
