sore foot

Yay: I ran a half-marathon yesterday!
Boo: My right foot now hurts whenever something presses on the arch (e.g. wearing a shoe) or when I try to walk. Massaging the arch and stretching it have no discernible effect.

Question for [community profile] runners: do y'all have any advice on what might be causing this pain or how I can deal with it? Most importantly, if I ignore it and run through the pain for the first 10 minutes, will it go away and let me keep running?

I don't know your level of fitness, but even at a high level of fitness, if you're in pain after a hm, I'd listen to your body and rest it. If I had seen this question at another site, I'd assume it was a troll question :o)

IANAD, and I mean, I'm only sorta a runner, but I've had a distressing number of foot issues, so take that for what it's worth.

The arch of the foot has all this connective tissue that can get inflamed and generally be a big pain in the butt. Or the foot. (Plantar fasciitis is an example of that, and I mean, that can hurt for months, apparently just out of general cussedness) So it's possible there's trauma there without you feeling any specific ow.

If it's hurting to walk on, I'd give it a couple of days, definitely not run on it, and see how it is. Ice probably wouldn't be a bad idea. Staying off it, too, as much as reasonable.

If it's still very sore in a couple of days and not getting better or not much, probably take it to the doc. If it's not, but running on it makes it come back just as much, ditto.

Hopefully taking a couple-three days off makes it feel all better, though. That would be the best thing. :)

Try massaging that calf.

Yeah, massage and stretch your calves. Everything's connected. Don't run until you can walk without pain.

You might need a more supportive shoe or insole for longer distances. You can strengthen your arches (if you still have any) to some degree with minimal/barefoot work on very short distances, but arches usually need support unless you have a lot of foot strength.
