Born to Run

Anyone else read Born to Run and have an inexplicable urge to start training for an ultra?

I just finished it and rather than throw out my running shoes and buy a pair of Lunas or Vibrams, I want to go out and start having 100 mile weeks and 50 mile runs and meeting the wonderful, crazy folks described in that book.

Anyone else have these insane urges?

Oh, yeah. I actually know quite a few ultrarunners, and they are indeed a bit off center. I have my eye on a few ultras around here that strike me as doable and fun - I had been thinking about doing a 50K last year, in late June after my May 1st marathon, but then I got injured and didn't run either.

50 miles (or 100K = 62 miles) would be the most I'd ever want to do, though. I am not a fan of sleep deprivation.

You might try to find Ultramarathon Man by Dean Karnazes, which I also enjoyed. Karnazes comes off as a little full of himself sometimes, but it's really an entertaining book.

I'm impressed and fascinated and interested when I read about ultras (haven't read Born to Run yet), but I'm still far from even a ½-marathon, so it's too early to think about ultras ^_^
