ilanarama: me, The Other Half, Moab UT 2009 (marathon)

I mentioned a while back that I made screwshoes, and said I would report on them after I'd run in them. My full report (with photos from today's run) is here on my journal, but here's the executive summary:

They work very well on packed snow.
They work well on unpacked snow, but it feels like running through sand - quite difficult!
They seem to work well on packed snow which has melted and frozen into lumpy ice. At least, I didn't slip or feel insecure, even on hills. However, I haven't had the opportunity to run on sheet ice (and hope I don't!) but I suspect that they won't provide adequate traction in that case.
They clatter and feel a little odd on bare pavement, but it's not bad. I suspect it causes them to wear faster, though.

Here is the link to the page I used as instruction: The Screw Shoe.

Here is a photo of the bottom of one of my screwshoes: Screwshoes and bonus kitty (she likes to hang out in my shoe closet!)

Here is what the bottom of one shoe looked like after today's run: Screwshoe post-run. You can see that they accumulate a chunk of packed icy snow in the heel space.

Another problem I had (particularly yesterday, as it was a longer run) is that eventually my feet get wet. I was working hard enough that they didn't get cold, but that would have happened after a while, I think. I am going to screw-ify my trail shoes also, I think, because they are more water-resistant. And maybe wear mini-gaiters if the snow is deep.
